Dr. Marshall Lew, a specialist in earthquake engineering, has served as principal geotechnical engineer and/or project manager on many major consulting assignments, including the evaluation of the seismic design requirements for universities, schools, hospitals, public buildings, high-rise buildings, industrial complexes, and transportation systems.

 

Marshall has directed many signature geotechnical and seismic risk projects in Southern California including the 73-story Library Square, the tallest building in Seismic Zone 4 in the U.S. Besides many tall buildings, Marshall has been the Principal-in-charge for many geotechnical projects including rail transit projects, sports stadiums, and historic preservation. Marshall is a member of ASCE, Structural Engineers Association of Southern California, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (Past President of Southern California Chapter), Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council (Past President),. Marshall has published over 90 papers and has led geotechnical earthquake investigation teams for several recent earthquakes in the United States and abroad. Marshall is an appointed member of the State of California’s Hospital Building Safety Board having served from 1999 to 2007 and 2015 to the current date.

 

Marshall has personally worked on over thousands of geotechnical engineering projects in Los Angeles and has been integral in the development of local and regional codes including his recent role as co-editor of the Southern California Earthquake Engineering Center (SCEC) publication titled "Recommended Procedure for Implementation of DMG Special Publication 117 – Guidelines for Analyzing and Mitigating Liquefaction Hazard in California,” (Co-editor: Geoffrey R. Martin). This document has subsequently been adopted by most building departments in Southern California and also by most of the practicing geotechnical consultants in Southern California.

 

Marshall has worked extensively in the computer and dynamics fields, as well as other areas of geotechnical engineering and consulting. He directs computer analyses for finite element studies, seismic risk, liquefaction, and site response studies due to earthquake excitation. He has extensive experience in geotechnical evaluations of seismic risk for seismic upgrades to existing structures, many of which have been historic landmarks, as well as for new construction. In addition, he was co-leader of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute’s team for geotechnical research of the 1989 Loma Prieta (San Francisco Bay Area) earthquake. Marshall also led a team of structural engineers for a reconnaissance of the Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake in 1999.
