About

Dr. Marios Panagiotou joined NYA in 2015 as a specialist in advanced nonlinear seismic analysis and design of complex and tall buildings as well as other types of structures. He is interested in resilient-based design using seismic isolation and energy dissipation and is the lead on technically advanced seismic analysis and design projects at NYA. Prior to NYA, Dr. Panagiotou served as an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at UC Berkeley for seven years. During his academic tenure, he conducted computational and experimental research on concrete and earthquake-resilient buildings and bridges that use seismic isolation and low-damage rocking components. He conducted seismic experiments using some of the largest full-scale mockups ever built worldwide. At UCSD, Dr. Panagiotou performed the seismic analysis, design, and shake-table test of a full-scale 7-story building which received the 2012 ASCE Alfred Noble Prize. He has published 25 journal papers, and over 70 conference papers and technical reports. He has taught graduate courses at Berkeley, UCLA, and USC. He was a member of the NIST-FEMA Functional Recovery Project and a current member of the 2026 NEHRP PUC IT-5 as well as the ASCE/SEI 7-28 seismic subcommittee. He is a co-developer of the seismic analysis computational framework BTM in FE-MultiPhys for reinforced concrete structures as well as of the software BTM Component. He is also the author of the Course on Earthquake Resilient Buildings which is available online.
