PROJECTS > HEALTHCARE > Veteran Administration (Long Beach Medical Center) - Long Beach, California

Challenges:

This 11-story reinforced concrete 300,000-square-foot hospital, was the first in the United States to be retrofitted using base isolation. The buidling had insufficient strength and ductility for an essential facility that must remain fully operational during and after a major earthquake.

Solution:

Non-linear analysis identified seismic isolation as the most suitable seismic retrofit strategy. The unimpeded function of the facility was ensured by confining construction operations to the outside of the building and positioning the seismic isolation bearings in the crawl space beneath the basement and first floor slab.
