Challenges:The challenge was to overcome the limited ductility of the building’s pre-Northridge earthquake steel welded connection. NYA's goal was to maintain the architectural integrity of the steel moment frame building and upgrade its structural performance to that of an essential facility.
Solution:Testing and analysis was completed and included NYA researching a Friction Pendulum Isolator for the City of Glendale (aesthetic and engineering concerns) and researching methods and manufacturers to create large expansion joints.
NYA developed a creative solution that included supporting the building on four main steel tripods, developing an isolation system, creating methods to obtain fire ratings in walls and developing movable railing at small bridges that connect the building with the ground.
There was also comprehensive coordination involved during construction sequencing so that the building would remain functional throughout the construction period.
