Challenges:Supporting a load bearing glass structure rigidly attached to an existing building that was intended to be used as a means of egress, while tolerating lateral movement due to earthquakes was a significant challenge.
Additionally, receiving approval from the building department was challenging because the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) did not have criteria established concerning the review of structural glass systems.
Solution:To satisfy the requirements of the load-bearing glass structure, a stair was suspended from the second floor by glass wall panels. The glass panels do not connect rigidly to the first floor, but are guided by channels.
To receive approval from the building department, a series of tests were conducted to analyze the structural glass system used at the Apple Store. After the tests were completed, the data reported enabled LADBS to grant a permit for the project.
